Ordering a bookcase wall bed involves more than checking whether the bed fits along one wall. The bookcases, cabinet depth, ceiling height, molding, open bed position, and custom storage features all affect the final footprint. Measuring these areas in advance creates a clear foundation for choosing a design that fits the room properly.
Start with the wall where the bed will sit. Measure the full usable width. Then mark nearby doors, windows, and furniture. Bookcases commonly come in 16, 18, 24, or 30 inches wide. Custom sizes can also be considered. The final width depends on the bed and storage design.
Measure from the floor to the ceiling. Bed height changes with the selected design. A standard bookcase can be about 5 inches shorter than the Murphy bed. A flush-front bookcase can match the bed height.
Also check crown molding. Standard crown adds 2½ inches to each side and the front. Large crown adds 3½ inches to each side and the front.
Depth matters just as much as width. Standard bookcases are about 11⅞ inches deep. Flush-front designs are 13⅞ inches, while outset bookcases are 17⅞ inches deep.
Choose the depth based on what the shelves will hold. Most books need about 10 to 12 inches. Printers, monitors, and larger equipment need more room.
Do not measure only the closed cabinet. The bed also needs clear floor space when opened. Leave enough room for people to walk around it. If a desk, sofa, or other furniture sits nearby, include that space in your measurements. The open position is just as important as the closed position.
Look closely at nearby doors and windows. They should not block the bed or bookcase sections. Existing base molding does not need to be removed. A standard 6-inch cutout can be made around it. Taller molding can receive an adjusted cutout. Also check the wall studs. The bed must attach directly to wall studs.
A Murphy bed with bookshelf storage can include more than open shelves. Plan the space around the items you want to store.
If a sofa is part of the room, inset bookcases can be required so the sofa arms do not interfere with operation.
