Zen Platform Bed
This bed has its eastern influences. It is a low profile platform bed. It is 18" off the ground to where the mattress starts. It was originally designed to use a futon mattress, but any innerspring mattress will be sufficient. The finish on this pieces is a deep cherry. To achieve this I use several steps in the finishing process. First I use a dye stain, usually a brown tone. This is a stain used on most production or assembly line furniture. It dries in a matter of seconds. This gives me the darkness needed for the finish, but leaves the wood looking too plain without depth. I then use a regular wiping stain, which "pop" the grain. This highlights the the grain and keeps it from looking bland. The clear coat that I use is a pre-catalyzed lacquer. I apply this in two coat with sanding in between. I thin the product very little if at all, to achieve a thicker more protective product. Case goods have been designed to match this bed, pictures are comming soon.
